It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, grandson, nephew, and friend, Darnell "DJ" Wicks, who was taken from us far too soon due to senseless gun violence. DJ's bright spirit, loving heart, and infectious energy touched all who knew him.
DJ was born on August 30, 2017, at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, IN, bringing immeasurable joy into the world. A proud second grader at Bottenfield Elementary School, he was known for his vibrant personality, boundless energy, and warm, welcoming nature. He never met a stranger-everyone was a friend in his eyes.
DJ is deeply cherished by his mother, Malaysia Wicks (Champaign, IL), and father, Darnell Hayes, Jr. (Champaign, IL); his maternal grandparents, Tyno (Tynette) Wicks (Champaign, IL) and Lakeeshin Pickett (Urbana, IL); and his paternal grandmother, Tamara Washington (Champaign, IL).
